Open Positions

Open postdoctoral research positions at ETH Zurich: catchment hydrology, ecohydrology, and geomorphology

The professorship of the Physics of Environmental Systems in the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich announces the availability of multiple postdoc positions for early‐career researchers. We particularly seek recent Ph.D.'s with strong technical skills, a solid background in the natural sciences or engineering, and research interests in hydrology, ecohydrology, (bio)geochemistry, or surface processes / geomorphology.

These positions are mostly supported by institutional funds, providing flexibility to pursue novel research directions. Some of the group's current and recent research focus areas include:
- Tracking water ages in streams and groundwaters using isotope tracers
- Exploring hydrochemical dynamics with high‐frequency "lab in the field" chemical and isotopic measurements in precipitation and streamflow
- Using isotopes in xylem water and cellulose to study tree water use
- Inferring ecosystem processes from the dynamics of streamflow and stream chemistry
- Studying the causes and consequences of the dynamic extension and retraction of stream networks

Postdocs normally pursue their own research as well as contributing to projects and proposals within the group's areas of research, participating in Master's‐level teaching in hydrology and environmental fluid mechanics, supervising students working on their theses, and representing the group at international conferences. The scientific working language of the group is English.

As Europe's leading technical university, ETH Zurich has excellent infrastructure and research support. Collaborative links with other Swiss universities and two federal research institutes, WSL and EAWAG, provide additional depth and breadth in environmental science, and the Swiss landscape is an unparalleled natural laboratory.

Applicants should supply a single PDF containing:
- a statement of their research interests, experience and technical background
‐ a CV and complete publications list
‐ and contact information for three references.

They may also supply up to three examples of their best published work, again as PDF's. The positions are available now and will remain open until filled; applications received by 15 November 2020 are assured of full consideration. All positions are potentially renewable until summer 2024, subject to satisfactory performance. As part of the ETH's efforts to promote women in science, qualified female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
